Monkey Orchid that Sensitive to Frost

The monkey orchid (Orchis simia) is an orchid. In the Netherlands and Belgium, the species protected by law. Also, the plant on the Dutch Red List of plants as stable to slightly increasing. The flower looks somewhat like a monkey, hence its Dutch name.

The monkey orchid kan 20-40 cm high. The glossy leaves are unspotted with a broad lanceolate form. The lower leaves are up at an angle. The stem is angular and is the top leaves enclosed. The plant blooms mid-May, the upper flowers of the inflorescence the first opening. The flower is light pink to lilac.

The monkey orchid is shade plant in the South Limburg grasslands on calcareous soil. The plant is sensitive to frost and can sometimes freezing out.

The monkey orchid is also in the Mediterranean and in isolated areas in western and central Europe, Asia Minor, Iran, Caucasus and North Africa. In Germany, they can be found along the Rhine and in Switzerland in the cantons of Geneva and Vaud.
