Gagea

Gagea is a genus of many species that bloom in the spring and belong to the Liliaceae family, being in Europe and western Asia. Its name pays homage to the English naturalist Sir Thomas Gage. It was originally described as species of Ornithogalum.

Location

These plants grow in humidity between rocks or under forest canopy. They are found throughout Europe.

Description

Gagea species are small bulbous monocotyledonous plants belonging to Liliaceae family. Except for one or two species of white flowers, yellow flowers have six tepals free, usually forming a star, sometimes a bell.

The different species are very close to each other, differing by the absence or presence of hair, and especially by the number and shape of basal leaves (very large) and stems.

Most species grow on limestone, often in the Mediterranean region, and are subject to orders of protection in France, Spain, and Italy.
