Arundina

Arundina is a genus of the orchid family (Orchidaceae). It has a single species, the bamboo orchid (Arundina graminifolia). This genus of tropical Asia, extends from India, Nepal, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Northern China to Indonesia and the Pacific Islands. It was introduced in Puerto Rico, Costa Rica and Panama.

It is a terrestrial orchid multiperennial with reedy stems, forming large clumps growing to a height of 70 cm to 2 m.

Leaves thin, long and narrow, are lanceolate, with a length of 9-19 cm and a width of 0.8 to 1.5 cm. Their edge is sharpened.

This orchid blooms in summer and autumn, with very loose racemes of splendid flowers, ten at most. They bloom in succession on the branches, which are 7 to 16 cm. These flowers, 5-8 cm in diameter, have a rosy lilac and white disk with a purple lip. The bracts are triangular and involve the main stalk of flowers.

Exisitindo only 200 plants growing in nature in Singapore, the species is close to extinction, caused largely by the destruction of their natural habitat, including rainforest and mangroves.
