The Catholic Feast Day

The All Souls 'Day, Day of the Dead or All Souls' Day is celebrated by the Catholic Church on November 2.

Since the second century, some Christians were praying for the dead, visiting the graves of the martyrs to pray for those who died. In the fifth century, the church dedicated a day of the year to pray for all the dead, for whom no one prayed and of which no one remembered. Also, the abbot of Cluny, Saint Odilon, 998 asked the monks to pray for the dead.

Since the eleventh century the popes Sylvester II (1009), John XVII (1009) and Leo IX (1015) require the community to dedicate one day to the dead. In the thirteenth century this annual day is now celebrated on November 2, because November 1st is the Feast of All Saints.

The Catholic doctrine evokes some biblical passages to support his position (cf. Tobit 12:12; Job from 1.18 to 20; Mt 12.32 12.43-46 and II Maccabees), and relies on a circulation of nearly two thousand years.

The Day of the Dead to the Protestant faith

Protestants in general, argue that the doctrine of the Catholic Church, which recommends prayer for the dead, has no biblical foundation. They said the only reference to such a practice would be from 12.43 to 46 in II Maccabees.

But the Protestants and Evangelicals, because they are, in Ansinus cathedra, do not recognize the canonicity of this book, nor the legitimacy of this doctrine, since Protestantism does not submit to Catholic traditions.

According to the Protestant interpretation, the Bible says that salvation of a person depends entirely on their faith in the saving grace that is in Christ Jesus and that faith is declared during his life on earth (Hebrews 7.24-27, Acts 4:12, 1 John 1.7-10) and that after his death, one passes directly by the judge (Hebrews 9:27) and that living and dead can not communicate in any way (Luke 16.10-31).

Protestants observe All Souls Day to remember the good things that the ancestors left as the legacy of a suitable character, for example. But they believe that people need to be cared for, only while they are alive.

Tradition of the Day of the Dead in Mexico

In Mexico it is celebrated the feast day of the dead, and feature a feast of Mexican culture, which attracts many tourists.
